Vincent van Gogh, Augustine Roulin (“La berceuse”), oil on canvas, 1888

The woman portrayed here is Augustine Roulin, the wife of the postman Joseph Roulin, one of Van Gogh's closest friends in Arles. Her nickname ‘la berceuse’ means both ‘lullaby’ and ‘babysitter’ in French. This is alluded to by the cord in her hands, as it was used to rock the cradle while singing lullabies.

For Van Gogh, she was the ultimate symbol of comfort and motherhood. He planned to make a triptych using this painting as the middle panel, with pictures of sunflowers on either side. His intention was to combine motherly love with the beauty and power of nature.
